[roc-info] Winter Orienteering - Ski-O - and the Empire State Games

Folks,

With this first big storm, it's now time to get out on your cross country
skis!-)

ROC is running two XC Ski-O events this winter at Mendon Ponds Parks.

The first is January 14th out of Hopkins Point as part of the Winterfest
(free!).

The second is February 7th out of Cavalry Lodge in the Southern section of
the park (All of $3 for club members, $6 otherwise).

For those that are less familiar with this aspect of the sport: Ski-O uses
the same map and navigation skills that you use on foot, but places you on
your cross country skis. The navigation usually works out faster on your
skis, but there may be times that you prefer to take them off - but you have
to carry them along with you;-)

Ski-Orienteering is part of the Empire State Games - and yes, there will be
games held this year in Lake Placid - November 20-21st. While we look for
modestly groomed conditions in our local parks, you can't beat Mt Von
Hovenburg - the host site and former Olympic venue. You'll have to get
there on your own (and people do car pool), and find a place to stay (and
people share accommodations), but your day at the mountain is covered with
your entry into the competition;-)

The top 10 competitors in each class that are interest in competing will
receive an invitation. Age classes are scholastic (-17), open (18+),
masters (40+), grandmasters (55+) for both men and women. Competitors are
ranked according to qualifying events, and in the last few years some
classes have been very lightly represented - it is not that hard to
qualify;-)

And yes - the two ROC events are qualifiers - so you don't have to travel
far to get an invitation!

The main rules for those interested in getting to the ESG Ski-O competition:
 - Must be a member of a NY orienteering club - like ROC [plus other odd
options you probably won't need]
 - Must enter at least two ESG Qualifiers and complete one in the class you
want to compete in at ESGs.
 - Rankings based on points awarded for finishes in qualifiers, plus bonus
points for completing more than two qualifiers.
 - Top 10 in each class as determined by the points standings are invited to
compete in the ESG finals. (This is "top 10 who intend to compete in the
finals", so some of those below the top 10 might be invited if some of the
top 10 do not intend to go to the finals.)

Full rules, current standings, race schedule, and latest conditions and meet
notes can be found here: http://empo.us.orienteering.org/ski-o/

Also, all who are competing in the ESG finals must register online (
http://www.empirestategames.org/winter/qualified.htm) and pay a fee ($10 for
open/scholastic, $40 for masters/grandmasters). More information ESG
registration will be posted prominently on the EMPO ski-O page closer to
ESGs.

We'll expect some chatter on the "ROC-TALK" mailing list over the next
couple of months.

Hope to see you out there.
