There will be an orienteering training session this Saturday, June 26, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Mendon Park, meeting in the parking lot west of the kennel on Pond Road.

The training objectives will be to improve our skills of following a bearing and route selection. The first activity will be to try to run/walk a line through various terrains and vegetations along a compass direction to reach a distinct feature (e.g. trail junction). This exercise will help develop one's compass navigation and map contact skills. There will be the option to do a different number of lengths depending on how much of a workout you want. We will then meet back at the start location at 9:45am to work in groups to talk about route and attack point selection for about five advanced controls. We will then each try to run/walk the mini course and implement our route plans. This will also be good opportunity to build on the map memory skills that Dick had us work on at the last training.

If you plan to come, please let me know by 6pm on Friday so I can print enough maps. Bring your own map bag and of course a compass. If you are late, I will place the maps on my windshield. We will all meet back-up at 9:45 a.m. for the second activity.

Look forward to seeing you on the trail soon,

Rob Stevens
