Subject: [usof-bod] Executive Director's Report/ Week of May 2nd/ Starts, Membership + Moving Forward

All,

I hope that you all had a nice weekend.

I wanted to take a few minutes ago and give you an update as to some of
the key measures of our strategic plan: starts and membership. First I
will give you year to date recap and then I will talk about moving
forward:

YEAR TO DATE
Currently local meet starts are doing very well, in the first quarter of
2011, the 15 clubs we can measure (on line results) had 34% MORE starts
than the first quarter of 2010.

A-meet starts are another story. While I do not have final figures for
the quarter, A-meet starts are going to be way down. This is because we
only had one A-meet in Q1 2011 (a delayed GA Navigator) vs. 5 A-meets in
Q1 2010.

OUSA membership remains steady at about 1,250 memberships (2,000+
members) vs a goal of 2,200 memberships for the year. A long way to go.
Club membership are concerning as there are only 5,500 club members, a
sharp drop vs prior years

MOVING FORWARD
As many of you know, the board of directors held its regular meeting at
the Interscholastics/ Intercollegiates in Gilroy, CA. 2/3rds of the
board meeting was taken discussing starts. Thanks to those board
members and interested members that attended and contributed.

Coming out of this meeting was the foundation for a plan moving forward.
The next step is that I have drafted an action plan and have forwarded
it to a work group for review. Once I get the "green light" (we meet
this week)a final action plan will be released and acted upon.

WHAT YOU CAN DO
Three things
1) Renew your membership when it comes due. If you aren't a member,
please consider joining. It's easy, just visit www.orienteeringusa.org.
2) Even if you have never been to one, attend, and participate in an
A-meet...even for a day. Many orienteers see A-meets as these hard core
sprints and long distance runs. While that is an important part of the
event and serves that portion of the orienteering population, A-meets
are truly events for all ability levels. I can testify. In addition
the spirit of community can not be beat. For the latest list of A-meet
events visit www.orienteeringusa.org or check out the latest issue of
Orienteering North America magazine.
3) If you are helping out on a project, please give me a call. You
don't have to serve on a board or a committee. Just help. You set the
rules.

If you have any questions, or would like to discuss, please give me a
call.

Have a good week.

Glen

Sincerely,
Glen

Glen Schorr
