be conducting a mapping workshop in conjunction with our Fall Classic
event. The dates and schedule are in the message below.
Linda

Here is the schedule for the mapping workshops at the Rochester
Orienteering Club National Meet and AGM. It is still “tentative” because
the Sunday session may be moved an hour or so earlier if people have early
start times so that they can start the workshop earlier.

If you have interest in joining any or all of these workshops, please
contact pgwolfe66 at gmail dot com.

Mapping Workshops at the ROC Event

Friday Sept. 15 Woods Mapping

9:00 Meet at area to be mapped for discussion of
mapping standards, methods

10:30 Introduction to actually taking field notes.
This is to be done either with materials provided by the workshop or on a
participant’s tablet.

11:00 Field work in a very small area. The size may be
dependent on the speed of the mapper but still it will be on the scale of
100 – 200 meters square. Experienced mappers will be working with the
participants to answer questions.

12:00 Lunch and discussion of the small sections by
comparing to each other’s and the actually map used for previous events.

1:00 More mapping with interaction with experienced
mappers in a larger area.

3:30 Group discussion of the various maps produced
by participants including comparison to the existing map.

                5:00 Departure

There will also be “take home” materials with contact information so that
questions can be asked of experienced mappers through email or phone
conversations.

Friday Sept. 15 Producing LIDAR Basemaps

7:30 until whenever… Event hotel Home 2 Suites in
Henrietta, New York

This session will work in reverse from the way things
actually happen. By this, the LIDAR basemaps will be shown and what they
can and cannot show. This is basically to draw attention to the quality
product that will be produced which then will be the reason the process of
developing the base map is worth the effort.

There will be “take home” materials so that participants
have resources (including contact information for experienced LIDAR
producers) so that they don’t have to remember everything.

Sunday Sept. 17 Producing Park/Schoolyard Maps
After people run their courses…….

2:00 (May be earlier if start times allow. Asking for an
early start time may be helpful.) Meeting at the area to
be mapped and handing out of materials.

2:10 Discussion of the process with the norms, i.e.
what to map and what not to map.

2:45 Mapping with interaction with experienced
mappers.

4:00 Discussion and comparison of the maps produced
by the participants.

4:45 How to get one of these maps finished so that
it can be used by people.

5:00 Departure and/or further map work.

                5:30 Final departure.

Schedule subject to change and may be moved earlier in the
day to allow for departures if participants have early start times.

There will also be “take home” materials with contact information so that
questions can be asked of experienced mappers through email or phone
conversations.
