Folks,

Now that the club has successfully crowned a number of "US National"
orienteering champions at Mendon Ponds Park and Rattlesnake Hill, it's time
to get back to business - who's the king of the hill in these parts!?!

The 2009 ROC “Club Series” opened with three events before the heat of
summer paused events in favor of the Club "Sprint" Series. As we move into
fall, two races remain that will settle regional bragging rights. Here’s
how things sit…

Rob Holmes, Mike Lyons, and Sergey Dobretsov lead the Male Open competition
with solid finishes. Rob holds the slight edge with one higher finish over
Mike and three over Sergey. In order to take over, Mike must compete
strongly in the last two races, and Sergey must find a way to get around the
course faster than Rob. Nate Lyons sits just behind them with just two races
under his belt – but they were wins! If he can continue that through the
last two races, the crown will be his. Pavel Korniliev has one win but with
two modest finishes, the series title seems out of reach.

Stina Bridgeman has a lead over Sylvia Klassen in the Female Open division.
With better results in two races, Lindsay Worner is position to pass them
both if she can ace both remaining races. Alex Jospe and Patty Lyons have
solid performances in one race each, but with only two remaining they’re
probably out of the running.

The Male Masters division includes a good half dozen contenders, and at this
point, winning out will give nearly any one of them the victory. Peter Dady
sits in front with the most points in each of the three races. But because
we’re using a best of 5 format, Vince Cassano can earn another 20 points
with two more wins that will take the crown. (Peter still controls his fate
if he can win the last two) Joel Shore, Carl Palmer and Victor Klassen are
chasing. To reach they top, they’ll have to find a way to beat both Pete and
Vince. Dick Detwiler trails, but has one solid performance and has set a
course. He’s got to find a way to overcome an unfortunate setback in
Mendon.

Jackie Novkov and Laurie Hunt sit tied upon the top of the Female Masters
classification. And because Laurie unfortunately received the wrong map at
Letchworth West, they have not faced off against each other this season.
Whoever is able to close out the series on top will take home the victory.

Bob Bundy and Richard Burgey are battling it out atop the Male Veterans
category. Each has placed higher than the other in one race with Bob
holding the slight lead. Tom Cornell sits just in third place but could
still make things interesting if he finishes the series strong.

Dayle Lavine and Kathy Bannister lead the Female Veterans category with one
win each. If I didn’t know them better, I’d say that things could get ugly
over these last two races;-)

In the youth categories, it’s not surprising to see the names of Lyons,
Holmes, and Dobretsov. Luke, Tyler, and Timothy each have solid
performances in the Boys 12 and under category with Luke holding an edge
over the others.

And finally, Zach Lyons and Joe Makowski are battling over the Male Junior
classification. Zach has three solid finishes, but Joe has beaten him to
the tape in each of his two races. These last races will be key for both.

The series has had three different course setters and several meet directors
over these the events. As noticed in the Sprint Series, all of the
competitors that have volunteered to set courses or direct an event are well
placed in the standings. They earn the average finish for the event they
volunteered for, but did not compete in.

In order to take home the club crown and local bragging rights, it certainly
looks like every competitor has to get out and race well for the two
remaining events of the season.

See you at Letchworth East and Powder Mill Parks where we'll settle this for
2009!
