First of all, a reminder about the training at Webster Park tomorrow,
Saturday, June 12, at 9:00 a.m. We'll be meeting in the parking lot at
the SW corner of Holt and Lake. Since it's a fairly large parking lot,
let's make it a little more specific, and meet in the SE corner of the
lot (near Holt Road), unless there is mass of cars there that early, in
which case, we'll play it by ear! A number of people have said they will
be coming, but we do have some extra maps printed, so even if you
haven't responded yet, but you find yourself free and would be
interested in coming, by all means, come on out. There will be a White,
Yellow, and Orange course set out (using streamers, rather than normal
controls). The main point of the exercise is map memory, but if you'd
just like to come out and try a course, feel free to do so. Please bring
along a map bag (although I'll have a small number of extras).

Attached are the ROC Club Series standings for the first three meets. If
you feel there are any errors, please let me know and I'll investigate.

Steve Tylock wrote up the following commentary about the series so far:

The 2010 ROC "Club Championship" is half over and the current standings
are starting to show some interesting trends.

We'll start with the Open Women's class because it happens to fall at
the top of the charts! Lindsay Worner holds a slim lead on first place
with solid finishes in each of the first three events. She's followed
closely by Linda Kohn who had a solid result at Webster to open the
season and has two Course Setter average-of-series entries after that.
(And thank you Linda, we do appreciate your effort on the courses, but
you WILL have to get back out as a competitor, we won't be able to give
you any more of those;-) Stina and Alex are waiting in the wings - and
with three events left can certainly close the gap. (Reminder - this
year we're using the best 4 scores out of 6 events)

Moving to the Open Men's class, Steve Tylock has jumped to an early
lead. He's definitely the fastest competitor with three events under his
belt, but several members - Sergey, Rob H, Pavel, & Rob S - have two
very solid events under their belt. Steve will have to find a higher
gear to hang onto that position. Mike and Nate Lyons can definitely run
with the top crown, but with other activities including competing with
the nation team, they may not be able to fit the ROC series into their
schedule.

Dick Detwiler and Pete Dady battle for the top of the Male 45+ class.
They each have one win in head-to-head competition, but Dick's Course
Setter fill-in score from the opening meet is currently giving him the
edge. Joel and Larry will look to press them as the season continues.

Dayle Lavine has a lead atop the Female 35+ class, but nothing is safe.
Jackie and Patty can both challenge if they compete in each of the
remaining 3 events.

The Male 65+ class picks up where it left off at the end of the 2009
season - and is just as fun to watch. One of the reasons the club
looked at a new scoring system was to help differentiate the
competitors. Bob Bundy and Richard Burgey each scored 38 points out a
possible 40 to tie for first place in 2009. So in the very first meet
of the season, Richard edged Bob to earn 15.08 points while Bob earned
15.00 points! Bob has competed in each event and has a lead in the
series, but with three events left in the season, nothing is secure.
Rick and Walter are challenging to keep the pressure on, and we'll just
have to continue watching the scores.

Kathy Bannister holds a commanding lead in the Female 55+ class, but
Laurie and Marilyn have shown that they can keep up - if they get to the
remaining events.

In the youth categories, it's quite evident that skill and speed can
result in large scores. Riesa Cassano has a solid lead in the Female
12- class, but shouldn't get too confident. Tim Dobretsov shows what's
possible by pulling in nearly 23 points with a quick run at Oatka! It
appears getting to events is sometimes a larger obstacle than getting
around the course, and in lightly competed events, Sylvia, Tim, Luke,
Isaac, Maggie, Kayla, Zach, and Vincent are all positioned to do well
over the second half of the season.

Well - there you have it - the mid-season recap. We've got the "Club
Sprint Series" and our Score-O summer events coming up and then it all
comes down to the final three Club Series events in the Fall. See you
there!
