2012 ROC TNT (Rochester Orienteering Club Tuesday Night Training)

Are you interested in intermediate to advanced orienteering training? ROC will be holding informal training sessions that are open to current ROC members on the first and third Tuesday evenings (6:30 – 8 pm) of each month starting in April and running through September. The training will be in various parks throughout the Greater Rochester Area. The training sessions will be run by volunteers and focus on developing technical skills and endurance. If you are a member of ROC and would like to participate in any of the future training events, please visit http://www.meetup.com/Rochester-Orienteering-Club-Training/ and request membership to the training group. If you are not currently a member of ROC, then it is time to take advantage of the new membership rates by downloading a membership form from http://roc.us.orienteering.org/ROCMembAppl.pdf and either bringing the form to the next orienteering meet or mail to the address on the form.

Below are more details of the ROC TNT sessions:
· Training is open to ROC members only and geared towards intermediate and advanced orienteers. Beginning training is currently offered at local meets.
· Training sessions will run during the first and third Tuesday evening from 6:30-8:00 PM starting in April and ending in September (12 sessions). This will depend heavily on whether we find the volunteers. If there is interest amongst the participant we can move the start time back after the April sessions. The sessions in April will end shortly after sunset as is. This Tuesday time was chosen since it was one of the most convenient times based on the last two years’ training surveys.
· Date, times, and locations will be posted on a specific ROC training meetup.com website. In order to join the ROC training meetup.com site to get information about upcoming training, you must be a current member of ROC and visit http://www.meetup.com/Rochester-Orienteering-Club-Training/ to request membership to the training group. Once you are granted membership you will have access to training communications and the maps as well as rights to post to the training forum.
· The sessions will be free and relatively informal.
· There will be a volunteer to lead each training session. Each leader will be responsible for picking the activities and preparing and posting any required maps if different than the base maps that will be posted before the start of the training season. Training sessions can be picked from http://o-training.net/w/Category:Orienteering_exercises. Exercises should not require any course setting before the training session and minimal prep time (i.e. <60 minutes) for picking an activity and making any custom maps if needed. The key is to make the responsibility of the session leader as minimal as possible to reduce burn-out and make things simple enough that we can have a large pool of session leaders. The main task is to pick an activity and prepare any materials (customize map, bring control flags/tape, etc.). If we can get 10 volunteers then a team volunteer leader will only responsible for one or two sessions.
· Attendees should visit the secure training web page and download and print their own pdf map before coming to the training session. No maps or bags will be provided by the club. At the beginning of the year a general map will be created and posted for each training session location. If a session leader wishes to create a custom map then this will also be posted a couple days before the training session.
· For those sessions when there is no volunteer leader, the attendees can decide on activities at the beginning of the session using the general map that was posted at the beginning of the year. This could be as simple as just doing a trail run/walk together.
· While participating in a training session, each participant must sign-in and return to the finish area and sign-out no later than 8pm. The session leader needs to confirm that all participants have returned.
Tentative Training Schedule, final schedule will be posted on meetup.com group site.
