The NY ski-o opener is scheduled for Dec 15 at Lapland Lake with courses
for all levels. Keep your fingers crossed for snow!
The full NY ski-o schedule can be found at the NYSSRA ski-o website
(http://skio.nyssranordic.org). Events are also posted on Attackpoint
(http://www.attackpoint.org). Check the NYSSRA website for details
about registration and start times, available courses, and (most
important) ski conditions and event status. Always check the NYSSRA
site before traveling - most events will be canceled if there is
insufficient snow, and a final go or no go call is sometimes made very
close to the event date if conditions are iffy.
Most events are part of the NYSSRA points series and are open to all
levels, including those new to orienteering or ski-o. (The main
exceptions are ESWG and NYSSRA Championships, which may not have courses
suitable for beginners.) A brief introduction to orienteering is often
available - just ask someone at an event. "Try it" events are geared
specifically towards beginners and may not have advanced courses - check
the notes for the particular event.
A basic level of skiing ability is important for enjoying ski-o, but you
don't need to be an expert skier to give it a try - beginner courses are
shorter and have easier skiing as well as navigation. Both classic and
skate techniques are legal in ski-o and while competitive racers will be
on skate skis, many people enjoy ski-o on classic skis. It is possible
to rent skis at some event venues.
